The challenge

When communities experience conflict, displacement, or crisis, the social fabric that once supported people through hardship gets torn apart. Traditional support systems collapse, trust between community members breaks down, and the networks that would normally guide youth toward positive alternatives disappear. This collective breakdown leaves entire communities unable to help their own members heal and rebuild. Local leaders lose influence, women's groups scatter, and institutions become unresponsive to people's real needs. Without functioning community support structures, young people often turn to gangs, violence, or other negative coping mechanisms—not by choice, but because the positive pathways have been destroyed. Communities become trapped in cycles where they can't mobilize for collective action, pool resources for recovery, or participate meaningfully in decisions that affect their future.

Our Method

We use our revolutionary Eco-Social Model to rebuild communities' capacity to support their members by together addressing economic marginalization, mental health crises, and community fragmentation. We work directly with local elders, women's groups, civil society organizations, and government institutions to strengthen their ability to serve young people. We facilitate reconciliation dialogues and collective trauma healing processes that restore trust and social cohesion.

Through research, advocacy, and policy engagement, we make institutions more responsive to youth needs. We generate evidence that shows what works and then advocate for institutional changes that create lasting systemic improvements. We build community capacity for peace-building and conflict resolution, linking psychological healing with economic empowerment and community-led initiatives. This creates sustainable support ecosystems that can withstand future shocks and guide the next generation toward hope rather than violence.

testimonials

As a teacher trained by Iftin in mental health, I've realized our role goes beyond academics; we are guardians of our students' emotional well-being. When one of my students lost his grandmother, who raised him, it deeply affected his studies, and I felt a strong responsibility to support him, so I created a safe space for him to express his feelings—something I believe is just as important as any lesson plan. Together, we can turn pain into strength, guiding them through their darkest moments.
Mohamed Abdi, School Teacher
Through my journey with Iftin, I discovered that true healing starts with connection. The foundation organized community support group sessions where people from different backgrounds came together to discuss the challenges we face. These sessions created a safe space for vulnerability, allowing us to share our experiences and struggles. I felt heard and less alone. I'm grateful to Iftin for creating this platform for us.
Ahmed Ali Mohamed, Community Leader from Minority Ethnic Group
Living in my community and witnessing the struggles with mental health, I believe that everyone has a role to support one another in times of need. Personally, by merging my pharmacy expertise with the recognition that mental health is as important as physical health, I've realized I can help create a safe space and mental health awareness for my community. It's a place where healing starts not just with prescriptions, but with compassion, understanding, and open conversations about the challenges we all face.

our impact

Created for every $1 invested
Our community-centered approach is transforming entire regions.
We've reached over 79,000 people across Somalia, proving that rebuilding community capacity for healing and support breaks cycles of violence and poverty that have persisted for generations. Every dollar invested in our programs creates $3.40 in economic value. This means more people working, families earning income, businesses thriving, and communities spending less on crisis response and more on growth.

When communities have tools to support their members through trauma and crisis, the changes spread everywhere—families become stable, schools see kids learning instead of fighting, local businesses can hire reliable workers, and violence drops dramatically. The transformation is remarkable. Communities that were once sources of instability become engines of healing and opportunity. Social networks that conflict tore apart now actively guide youth toward jobs and education instead of gangs and violence.
