healing

The challenge

Over 2 billion people live in areas affected by conflict, displacement, and climate shocks, where mental health disorders are three times more prevalent than the global average. Traditional Western mental health models, reliant on extensive clinical infrastructure and specialized personnel, are demonstrably inadequate for addressing this immense global need. This silent mental health crisis impacts every aspect of society—from families struggling to support traumatized children to schools overwhelmed by students experiencing panic attacks to employers unable to retain workers battling untreated post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Without accessible, culturally appropriate mental health support, entire communities remain trapped in cycles of suffering that undermine all development efforts.

Our Method

We've pioneered a breakthrough approach that works with communities in crisis zones to create their own mental health systems using their cultural practices and wisdom. We build certified mental health workforces where none exist. We train everyone from community leaders to clinical counselors, connecting them through telemedicine to specialists worldwide so even remote communities get professional-quality care.

We embed mental health support into places people already trust—schools, religious institutions, workplaces. This makes healing as accessible as community life itself and removes the stigma that keeps people from getting help. We've created toolkits that integrate healing into job creation and workforce development, peace-building and reconciliation processes, justice and legal systems, education and youth programs, and climate adaptation initiatives.

This approach rebuilds the social fabric that conflict tears apart, creating sustainable peace from within communities. Even the most traumatized societies become their own source of healing and resilience.

testimonials

I never thought I could feel this happy again. The psychosocial first aid from Iftin was like a lifeline, lifting the sadness that had weighed me down. It showed me I wasn't alone, and with each session, I found joy in being a mother and in life again. This journey taught me that healing is possible and that we can help each other through tough times.
Amino Abdi, Program Participant
I discovered that taking care of my mental wellbeing was the first step toward reclaiming my future. The counseling sessions I received were instrumental in my healing journey, teaching me that it's okay to seek help, lean on others, and believe in my ability to rise above my struggles. Each challenge I faced became a lesson in resilience, and graduation was not just a milestone; it was a testament to the strength found in community and the transformative power of mental health support.
Kadar Abdiwahab, Youth Program Graduate
Dr. Saida's sessions have transformed my life, giving me a chance to shine and heal. This journey has not only benefited me but also my family, friends, and community. I've learned to manage stress and support those around me, especially in a Somali culture where mental health is rarely discussed.

our impact

106
Mental health professionals trained
79
New clinical counselors with diplomas
Our community-based approach works. We've proven that professional mental health care can reach massive scale in the world's most challenging contexts.
In Somalia, we've trained 106 mental health professionals across all levels, including 79 Clinical Counselors with diplomas—creating the first certified mental health workforce in areas that had zero services before. These professionals now serve over 79,000 people who previously had nowhere to turn for help. The transformation is stark. Participants experienced an 83% reduction in depression rates, 88% reduction in anxiety levels, and 98% improvement in emotional regulation.

This breakthrough in one of the world's most fragile contexts has created a blueprint for global replication. By building sustainable local capacity and connecting it through telemedicine, we've shown that geography and resources no longer have to determine who gets life-saving mental health support. Our approach doesn't just heal individuals—it rebuilds entire communities' capacity to support their members through crisis and trauma.
